
Peter said, ‘Focus on the last ten minutes. In an interview with MTV News, he explained trying to get into the mindset to write this song, he said: “I’ve never been a dwarf, but I’ve wrote a song from the perspective of being a dwarf. The entire team down in New Zealand was out of this world.” Sheeran watched the movie, wrote the song, and recorded most of it in one day. I was allowed complete freedom to create what I thought was fitting for the film, which is very rare, and Peter, Fran and Philippa (Boyens, screenwriter) were always on hand to give notes and pointers. It’s so intense I felt I needed a way to ease people out of the theatres.


The song has lilting, Celtic-influence to it, in an interview with Jam Music, Sheeran explained how it happened, he said: “The first idea I had for this song was something epic, but it seemed like, when I watched the film, my heart was pumping so much. Sheeran wrote this song as a soundtrack for The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug, on the request of Director Peter Jackson and his co-producer wife Fran Walsh, it was their daughter’s suggestion.
